Resourceful Judge and Greedy Shopkeeper
One day, a poor man was passing through the market of Aksehir.
He passed by a store selling kebabs, and smelling the wafting smell of kebabs, he was tempted to have some.
Alas! But the poor man had no money to buy meat. So, he took a few slices of bread out of his pocket and ate them against the smoke coming out of the grill.
He was about to leave when the vendor grabbed his arm.
"Hey! Wait right there! You can't leave until you pay! " shouted the shopkeeper.
The poor man was shocked and refused to pay because he had not bought the roast from the shopkeeper.
So the poor man argued with the shopkeeper for a long time. The argument between the two drew many passers-by, most of whom felt that the shopkeeper should not have charged. But the shopkeeper was very determined. He did not want to hear any argument. Finally, both parties decided to go to see a judge to settle the issue.
After hearing what happened, the judge turned to the poor man. Said to him, "Give me all the money you have."
The judge's words shocked all the onlookers and the poor man. Nevertheless, he gave the bag of money to the judge.
The judge held the bag to his ear and jingled it to make sure it was not empty. Then he dumped the few coins in the bag onto a table and began to count them one by one. When he had counted every coin on the table, he turned to the shopkeeper.
"Did you hear the coins?" He asked the shopkeeper.
The shopkeeper was very excited and nodded his head in agreement.
Then the judge put all the coins back in the bag and handed them back to the poor man.
The poor man looked surprised. Then the judge turned to the shopkeeper to the astonishment of the crowd and said, "The sound these coins make is the right price for your smoke. You sold your smoke to this poor man and now he has repaid you with the sound of the coins.
The judge's wit won a round of applause, and the story spread through the town, and the judge gained more support and love from the townspeople.
